Thinking About a Short Course While at CAMS2016? Why Not?!

A key aspect of the CAMS Conference is providing attendees with opportunities for education on crucial issues in materials engineering and science. Our short course program is the centerpiece of our educational efforts and we are excited to announce the topics for 2016.

Use of Metallography in Failure Analysis

George F. Vander Voort, Consultant for Vander Voort Consulting – Struers, will conduct this short course, which is centered on the fundamental principles of analysing metal failures and the use of microscopy techniques.

The short course will be broken up into the following topics:

  • §How to Conduct the Failure Analysis: This section will focus on the reasons for conducting a failure analysis, the causes and examination steps of failures, the tools available to an analyst, the appropriate sequence of a successful examination, microscopic and macroscopic methods for failure analysis. It will also list some of the common questions that need to be answered during an analysis, how to write a report, making recommendations and following-up on the recommendations.
  • §Fractography: This section of the course will discuss fractures and specifically the modes and mechanisms of fractures, macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of ductile fractures as well as brittle, fatigue and corrosion-assisted fractures.
  • §Failures Due to Materials or Manufacturing Problems: This topic is designed to illuminate the ways in which material problems can contribute to failures, including: hydrogen blisters and hydrogen flake failures, poor formability related failures, internal liquid metal embrittlement, grain boundary carbide films and seams and laps. It will also cover failures due to manufacturing problems including, heat treatment problems, decarburization, temper embrittlement, improper electrical discharge machining and welding failures.
  • §Failures Due to Service Problems: This section has been designed to illustrate the ways in which corrosion problems, creep and embrittlement phenomenon, fatigue, thermal fatigue and wear can all contribute to failures.
  • §Failure Examples: This topic will provide a detailed study on specific failure case histories.

Thermal Spray Technology

This short course will be conducted by Professor Christopher C. Berndt, Professor of Surface Science and Interface Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology, and will focus on the ways that thermal spray technology and coatings can play a part in solving critical problems in demanding environments.

The course will: provide a grounding and understanding of thermal spray processes, use simple physical models to explain complex scientific concepts and show how knowledge can be integrated into practical engineering applications and commonly accepted thermal spray practices.

This course is aimed at technologists, engineers and technicians who want to increase their understanding of thermal spray processing science and how to apply this knowledge. Graduate students and other professionals will also benefit from this course as it deals with current knowledge as well as providing an insight into future challenges and markets in this manufacturing sector.
