Everyone knows the old saying about Melbourne’s weather: ‘four seasons in one day’. Thankfully, there’s a huge chance you won’t have to deal with the unpredictability of Melbourne’s weather when you attend the CAMS conference in December. December marks the beginning of summer in Melbourne and that means goodbye to the wild, windy, wet, changeable weather of a Melbourne spring.

December may actually be the best time to visit Melbourne; as the wind dies down, you can count on plenty of days of sunshine, while the at-times oppressive heat of January and February is still months away. December weather means beautiful sunny days and pleasant nights. The temperature rarely climbs above 30 degrees and you count on it to drop below 20 degrees at night to ensure you get a pleasant night sleep.

The spring rains mean the many parks will be green and in full bloom and you can go for a leisurely stroll along Southbank, or through the Botanical Gardens on a balmy afternoon. December in Melbourne also means daylight savings, the sun will be up until 8.30pm and you can revel in the freedom of a day that seemingly lasts forever.

December weather is also perfect to enjoy all the activities that Melbourne and Victoria have on offer. Have a long, lazy lunch in the afternoon sun in one of our many award-winning restaurants or head out to the Yarra Valley or the Mornington Peninsula and enjoy a glass of world-class wine right at the Cellar Door.

Beach lovers will be spoiled for choice. If you want to stay local, Brighton, Sandringham, St Kilda and Elwood all have swimming beaches only a short tram or train ride away. Phillip Island has stunning surf beaches and a burgeoning restaurant and café culture. You can catch the penguin parade and sample the famous fish and chips at the pier in San Remo. For any keen surfers, a trip to Bells Beach is an absolute must and it is the perfect place to start your Great Ocean Road odyssey.

Whatever you’re interested in, the weather in December will provide the perfect climate in which to experience it. Melbournians don’t like making promises about the weather, but December is one of the few times where we can count on our weather to provide us with beautiful sunny days to light up the river and the bay, get everyone out in the parks our along the banks of the Yarra and fill everyone with the spirit that makes Melbourne such a special place to visit.
